Jan Cylwik

The Artist and Ideologies

A Polish name and the last vestige of a Black Country accent, provide a hint that Jan comes from a family riven for half a century by the ideologies which created the Iron Curtain.

In Lost Futures, Jan has fashioned a unique way of looking back at ideologies and our desire to hold onto their promised utopias.

In this post truth era, he questions how beliefs and hopes are formed. Are visions of the future created by enlightened debate with a global perspective or are they recalled from figures of trust or utopian futures which already inhabit our minds?

He has employed high resolution macro-photography to transform the figures on antique coins into a neo-classical frieze.
